Household Hazardous Waste


It is illegal to dispose of toxic or hazardous products in your garbage or recycling carts. It is also illegal to pour them down the drain or dump them on the ground.
The San Mateo county Household Hazardous Waste Program holds FREE drop off events at various locations through out the County for the proper disposal of toxic and hazardous products such as:
Paints, varnishes, stains
Solvents
Pesticides, herbicides or poisons
Pool chemicals
Cleaning fluids
Automotive fluids and filters
Fertilizers
Photo chemicals
County residents may call the County Household Hazardous Waste Program at 650.363.4718 to schedule the required appointment or register on line www.smhealth.org/hhw.

Curb Side Collection
Used Motor Oil
Pour used motor oil into a plastic bottle with screw-on lid (5-gallon limit) such as a detergent bottle or motor oil bottles. Place used motor oil containers alongside recycling cart.
 
Used Oil Filters
Place drained oil filter in sealed plastic bag and put in recycling cart under the BLUE lid and on TOP of the bottles and cans.
Household Batteries and Cell Phones
Wrap your cell phone in newspaper to protect it, then place it in a CLEAR SEALED plastic bag along with your household batteries.
Place the sealed plastic bag INSIDE your blue recycling cart under the BLUE lid and on Top of the bottles and cans.
